Visiting Ketut Liyer: The Palm Reader of Eat Pray Love

When we arrived at his house, there were some people outside Ketut Liyer house waiting  for their return. Ketut Liyer is a traditional healer and a palm reader.  He has become popular after the book and the movie Eat Pray Love. This is also the reason why I visited him that day. My client wanted me to take her to meet, Ketut Liyer, the palm reader. After waiting for about two hours, then my client, got her turn. So, there she was sitting cross legged before the traditional healer. I sat by her side, my job was to translate what the traditional healer said to her. The palm reader looked at me and and asked, "who are you?" I said to him that I was the tour guide. And my clients ask me to translate what he said to her. To my surprise, he spoke English quite fluently. But there were some instances that I needed to translate. Ketut looked at her face, taking into details of the shape of her eyes, her eyebrows, and then went on saying, "you are a very beautiful lady and

Trekking around Lake Tamblingan with Lim family

It was a cloudy day in Bali. Rain poured down lightly from the sky. I went with Mr Lim and his family (his wife and his two children, a 17-year-old daughter and 15-year-old son) to go trekking in the tropical forest of around Lake Tamblingan. We arrived at Munduk village at around 11 AM. Munduk village is located in a higher land from where we can look down in the distance, the two lakes. Lake Buyan and Lake Tamblingan. Our trekking plan was to start walking from Munduk village down to the tropical rainforest. There was a trekking post, a small building, where my friend, Kadek, a professional trekking guide, was waiting for us. I said hello to Kadek and then we started descending through the stairs into the thickness of the tropical jungle. At the beginning of our trekk, it was a bit easier. Since there are a few stairs built along our trekking route, from where we were, at the top of a valley, descending approximately about 90 m. But we had to be careful because the stairs are a

Random Things You See in Bali

Image
Your travel to Bali is unique. It can not be replicate by anyone. After watching Eat Pray Love, many ladies travel to Ubud to find their future husband. Many men staying in Ubud begins speaking English with foreign accent. Hoping this ladies would find them interesting to talk to. Yes, maybe you met your future foreign accented husband in Ubud, but you know it does not always happen that way. Liz experience's is unique, and so is yours. (Liz is the character in Eat Pray Love) Ok, stop the bubbling you mister driver, what are you trying to talk to? All right, here are things that you might see in Bali. It's every day life, don't expect something fancy. DogS You will see a lot of dogs. Mostly thin. Yes, they have lots of exercises. Their jobs is to guard the house. Maybe they want to greet you, but they can be shy. Or they just don't talk to strangers. Please don't take it personally. Cock Fighting 'Favorite sport of many Balinese men' as a friend of mine put

Great View from Saranam

Image
Here is the Saranam hotel and restaurant. I particularly like the scenery and the location of the restaurant. Looking down from the hotel restaurant, you can see down below at the hotel rooms, rice fields, a fountain, green park with well groomed weed, and a small pool. At the background, you can see some rice terraces with coconut trees growing in the rice fields path and forest nearby. If you ask, where it is, I can tell you. It's in a village called Pacung, Baturiti. Looking on a Bali map, you will see it is about in the middle. Follow the trace to Bedugul, Lake Bratan, to North Bali. But don't go that far, Pacung is before Bedugul. From Denpasar, it will take about one hour or so. It's a convinient stop over, when going to North Bali tour. Breaking the long journey by ordering a cup of coffee or tea (if you don't drink coffee) is not a bad idea after all. Especially if you drink the coffee while enjoying the green scenery and cool temperature. Or if you arrive here

Touring for Authentic Green Coffee Beans

Image
Ms. Tanya Lai said," I would like to get green coffee bean. Must be green, not roasted." Here it came again. Another authentic Bali coffee tour, a bit different from the last tour that I did with Karl. But besides those places now in Seribatu, and Perean village in Bali, I did not know any people who can supply good quality coffee beans. So, here was the adventure again. Roasted coffee only last for about two weeks, she told me. Raw green coffee can last up to a year. Well, if you roast your own coffee, definitely you must get the green bean. Going to the village was no issue for me. For her, it was a nice experience. I thought she really enjoyed walking through the village road and enjoying the views of coffee being dried in front of every villagers in this village. As long as you can see, you will only see coffee beans put on mats made of bamboo being exposed to the sun light. As we walked down the village road, we stopped at one of the coffee farmer house

Funny Scenes of Kecak Dance in Uluwatu

I really like the way the local present portion of Ramayana epic in Kecak dance. They usually add few funny characters to enliven the drama. Like this Ramayana dance. You will meet some "bad guys" in this story who try to make you laugh along the show. They greet you in many different languages including English and Japanese. Some bad guys also have a "punk" hair cut like the one you see in the video. I took this video when I was taking my clients to Uluwatu. Uluwatu is an area where you can enjoy the beauty of Uluwatu temple standing on the cliff with the sun set behind. And at one corner of the cliff, there is a stage built by locals for showing the Ramayana dance. It is, just as you think, another tourist show. But this is different. Just see for your self the spoiler in the following video. There is an unexpected scene where Hanuman, the Monkey God, appears from a place that the spectators will never think of. Apologize for the "fair quality" of the vi
